NorthConnex works closely with stakeholders to ensure the technology, safety, and incident response capabilities of the NorthConnex Motorway, and the people who operate it.

Testing Motorway Safety Systems

While Sydney slept on 18 October 2023, NorthConnex operators, together with NSW Emergency Services, and staff volunteers, simulated a series of in-tunnel incident response scenarios and role-plays. These were designed to test the world class motorway’s safety systems and protocols, including:

  • ensuring control room operators see motorists and have support vehicles arriving within minutes,
  • considering the needs of people with a disability or who may experience access problems in emergency situations, like moving to designated evacuation areas behind fire safe doors,
  • better preparing first responders for potential emergencies that may need to be managed on the motorway, and
  • following all safety protocols with emergency services.

Benefits to Motorists

We work together with our partners and stakeholders to ensure the safety of motorists.

Learning and practicing, in a safe way, how to respond to incidents and emergencies, helps NorthConnex to build on close partnerships and build familiarisation with tunnel safety features, including fire-safe zones, emergency lighting and ventilation systems.

This approach results in improved coordination between tunnel operators and emergency service organisations.

Since opening to the travelling public in October 2020, NorthConnex (also the M11) has become a popular link in the city’s network, safely connecting thousands of customers and communities across Greater Sydney and beyond, every day.
